Getting Your Vehicle Ready for Summer

May 27th, 2015 by

The first day of summer will be here in less than a month. While most of us are ready for the warmer weather and summer activities, it is also important to ensure that your vehicle is ready for the summer months and the driving that will take place in it hot, dry conditions. Prepare your vehicle for summer by doing these things:

Get the Cooling System Checked

Of course, you can check this yourself if you are so inclined, but either way, make sure it gets looked at to help ensure that your vehicle doesn’t overheat this summer. According to the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, the cooling system should be flushed and refilled about every two years and the level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence recommends a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. If you are checking this system yourself, be sure to wait to remove the radiator cap until the engine has completely cooled.

Get Your Oil Changed

To keep your vehicle running smoothly, it’s important to have the oil changed throughout the year – not just during the summer – as specified in your vehicle’s manual. If your car is due, get it done now and keep up with it during the summer months, as needed.

Check Your Tires

Your vehicle’s tires play a very important role in the running of your vehicle. That’s why it’s important to keep them well maintained. Check tire pressure and wear, to be sure everything is in good condition. If your tires need to be replaced, replace them. And while you are checking tires, give your spare a once over too and ensure your jack is in good working order.

Inspect Your Brakes

If your vehicle is pulling, if you are hearing noises, or if your brakes just aren’t working as well as they should be, get them inspected. It’s better to take care of the problem before it gets any worse, to keep you and any passengers you may have, safe while you are out on the road this summer.

Get Your Air Conditioning System Checked

Stay cool in your vehicle this summer by making sure the air conditioning system is functioning properly. Check the belts for damage or wear, as well as the fins of the condenser to ensure they are free of debris.
